Originally from Nottinghamshire, Helwys led a group of English separatists to exile in Amsterdam where he, together with John Smyth, helped lay the foundations of the Baptist movement. Despite Helwys’ historical importance, little is known of the details of his life, and even the circumstances and date of his death are matters of speculation. However, recent manuscript discoveries give new and important insights into Helwys’ life and character, particularly during the 1590s and early 1600s before his departure to Holland. Within this study Dr. Kreitzer introduces some of these materials, shedding new light on Thomas Helwys’ early years but and offering future historians fresh insights to consider when investigating his life and its impact |
