Summary: | This background paper assesses the consequences of civil war in Africa and provides recommendations on how to deal with these consequences. Historically, Africa has had a high prevalence of conflict but during the last decade the continent has seen the termination of a number of civil wars. Since a high proportion of peace settlements break down it is important to understand the challenges post-conflict societies face. The recommendations suggest that appropriate outside assistance and internal reform can strengthen the peace in post-conflict countries. This is Africa’s opportunity to break out of the conflict trap. |
