Sumario:The OARSI meeting provided an informative journey through recent developments in OA research. The complexity of OA is apparent, but the advances in understanding are encouraging. A comprehension of the processes of chondrogenesis and inflammation is likely to provide new avenues for therapeutics. The presentations on chondrogenesis signified the importance of understanding the mechanisms underlying cartilage generation, as well as degeneration. In particular, OA chondrocytes may undergo dedifferentiation, and chondrocyte implantation requires methods to generate and maintain the chondrocytic phenotype. The potential importance of the S100 family in OA was particularly apparent in discussions on immunity. The sessions on clinical outcomes and biomarkers reinforced the importance of the ability to predict disease progression, and suggested that the use of multiple markers is important for achieving effective prognostic approaches. © The Thomson Corporation.
