Description
Summary:Basing itself on largely unpublished documents held in archives across Europe, the article examines the career of Scottish painter Katherine Read (1723-1778) as a cosmopolitan one: she was trained in France and Italy, spoke and wrote fluent French, set up a highly regarded studio in England and left for India when she was over 50, all thanks, in part, to the Scottish (Jacobite) identity of which she remained conscious, but with a clear openness to other people and cultures.
