Summary: | An approximate calculation, based on bearing capacity theory, is presented for the ultimate capacity of an unreinforced or reinforced unpaved road, idealized as a granular fill over clay. The calculation is calibrated against rigorous numerical analyses to determine an equivalent load-spread angle. The method is then compared with experimental results for unreinforced and reinforced roads in both plane strain and axial symmetry. Empirical methods are used for predicting the effect of repeated loading on the behaviour of the road, and the possible contribution of shakedown analysis is examined. |
