description More than 60 percent of the world’s oil reserves reside in carbonate reservoirs. Saudi Arabia has the lion’s share of these ‘giant’ hydrocarbon reservoirs. Given this magnitude of the resource, its exploitation and management becomes paramount and its management is the responsibility of Saudi Arabia’s national oil company, Saudi Aramco. While Ghawar, the world largest oil field, has been the focus of much attention, the company manages several other large carbonate and clastic fields, producing both oil and gas. Over the years Saudi Aramco has implemented best-in-class reservoir management and production practices in its fields to play the role of an efficient, stable, and reliable oil producer that the world can depend on for their energy needs. This article sheds light on some of the prudent reservoir management practices that the company has adhered to over the years and the direction it is heading to maintain that leadership role in providing reliable oil supply to the world.
