Summary: |
PREFACE TO THE CORRECTED REPRINTOF VOL. VII (INDEX)

P.D. Record's index of 1953 has not been revised systematically in this reprint. Rather, the corrections comprise the random alterations and additions which have been made by Staff and Readers in the official annotated copy in Duke Humfrey's Library over a quarter-century of use. All these corrections have been checked. Innumerable additions could have been inserted from more recent Bodleian catalogues covering particular classes of material, e.g. M. C. Crum's First-line index of English poetry 1500-1800 ... (2 vols., Oxford 1969) or O. Pacht's and J.J.G. Alexander's Illuminated manuscripts . .. (3 vols., Oxford 1966, 1970, 1973, supplement 1974); but such an attempt seemed unnecessary.

The corrections fall into two categories:

A. Corrections of mistakes inherent in the index itself: simple misprinting of Summary Catalogue numbers, the conflation in a single entry of different people or places with the same name, a few accidental omissions. Corrections of this type have been made without sigla.

B. Corrections and additions in the index, reflecting changes which ought to be made in the body of the Summary Catalogue itself. Since vol. II pts. i-vi have been reprinted without alterations, the Reader must not expect to find confirmation of the corrected index entry in the main text. Such corrections have been marked in the index with the sigla described in P.D. Record's introduction, p.vii. Record's own work took into account many corrections which had accrued since the printing of the earliest volume (III) in 1895.
