Sumari:This paper uses a distribution of ring dislocations to find the solution for the frictional axisymmetric receding contact of a semi-infinite layer pressed against a half-space by a point force. The frictional behaviour between the surfaces of the layer and the half-space is modelled via Coulomb friction. The problem is fully characterized by the coefficient of friction between the interfaces. For a realistic coefficient of friction and finite load, the contact will always be partially open and partially slipping, even if there is no friction. It is shown that the interfacial tractions are proportional to the applied load while the contact area is independent of it. The transition from the unloaded to loaded configuration is discontinuous.
