Artificial intelligence, by way of the automation of the transport system, is one proposed ‘solution’ to the ‘problem’ of freight haulage as currently imagined. This chapter considers the emergence of autonomous lorries as a process of making the ‘safe’ lorry by eliminating, or reducing the role of, the ‘unsafe’ driver.
