description | In the Southern Middle Atlas of Morocco, the well-documented Marnes a gypse (Cenomanian) are overlain by the lower part of the Amghourzif Formation, dated as Upper but not uppermost Cenomanian on the basis of benthonic foraminifera of the subfamily Rhapidionininae. The upper part of the Amghourzif yields upper Upper Cenomanian Cauvini zone ammonites, and planctonic foraminifera of Whiteinella archaeocretacea biozone of uppermost Cenomanian-lowest Turonian date. These sediments accumulated on a marine infralittoral carbonate platform environment of shallow water, normal salinity and oxygenation. In the High Moulouya, the top of the 'Marnes a gypse' has been dated as Upper Cenomanian on the basis of the ostracod fauna, which inhabited a nearshore mud-dominated environment. The lower part of the Amghourzif Formation is dated as Upper but not uppermost Cenomanian on the basis of the occurrence of Rhapidinininae, and the ammonite Neolobites vibrayeanus. These sediments represent a marine infralittoral environment that rapidly changed to a reduced salinity kenoxic one, with discorbid foraminifera. The transgression initiatives deposition of these marine platform carbonates is shown to be diachronous, becoming progressively younger from the Saharan border to the South to the central Middle Atlas to the North. The palaeogeographic distribution of ostracod, benthic foraminiferal and ammonite faunas associated with the Upper Cenomanian transgression indicate faunal connections between that part of the Atlas studied, the south Tethyan region and to the South Atlantic, the latter via the transsaharian seaway. |
