description Early Syriac writers often associate the prelapsarian state of Adam with the nature of angels, and advocate the imitation of angels by believers in the present age. Building on Winfrid Cramer’s 1965 study of Ephrem’s ideas about angels,1 the present essay explores themes of resemblance between Adam, angels, and righteous human beings in the works of St Ephrem (d. 373). It compares his treatment of with that of Aphrahat (active 337–344), and with the slightly later work known as the Liber Graduum. In dialogue with more recent studies of early Christian views of angels it also surveys the different ways in which the three writers understood the angelic condition in relation both to humanity and to their different audiences.
