description The Drupal content management system has a vibrant community that develops, documents and evangelises the software. It supports itself through the main Drupal site, the DrupalCon conferences and user groups. There is a strong focus on the Drupal community through initiatives and these meetings. In an open source community, like the Drupal one, we might assume that there is a homogenous entity. This is implied by the use of the singular community, rather than referring to them as communities. In this paper, we question how homogeneous this really is or whether is it is an umbrella concept for heterogeneous communities. If the latter, then do the sub-communities interact with each other and how? There is an implication that there may be more than one community and we make exploratory investigations into types community in the source data sets. We use sonification to present the data, “the use of nonspeech audio to convey information.” Using the ChucK language to create sounds for the media types to present the types of event, we discuss the use of in channel-based sonification as well as experimenting with the broadcasting of the sonification to other machines to play a filtered version of the data.Looking at related works from social coding and sonification, we discuss the types of community and their interactions. Focussing on the role of one company, we find linked actors who bridge these “social machines”.
