description The Summa contains an extensive discussion of the creation of matter, which addresses two main questions: a general question of whether matter is something created or rather an eternal independent principle of creation, and a more specific question about the mode of creation of matter, that is, whether matter is first created without any forms or whether it is created together with a form so that a composite of matter and form is properly-speaking created. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the two quaestiones of the Summa devoted to these two issues. The principal aim of the investigation is to explain and assess the views of the Summists on these two issues and the arguments in support of them, and to point out those aspects of their discussions that contain important indications about the ontological status of matter and that allow a comparison with the views of John Duns Scotus.
