Shrnutí:In this chapter, I discuss the relationship between theology and history in midnineteenth-century Germany based on the academic controversy fought between Eduard Zeller (1814–1908) and Albrecht Ritschl (1822–1889) concerning the significance of historical criticism for theology and the importance of Ferdinand Christian Baur’s contribution to a properly historical form of theology.1 As will become evident, this controversy subtly ties in with various problems of the understanding of history, the place of theology in the university, and the role of Wissenschaft in the period after 1848 more generally.
