Description
Summary:This article offers a detailed philological, historical and literary examination of an uninvestigated medieval Latin version of the Passion of St Demetrius of Thessalonica (BHL 2127) from medieval Hungary which, just like H. Delehaye had conjectured, asserts that the martyr was born in Sirmium and went later to Thessalonica where he was martyred. After a thorough study of the transmission, language and style of the text, the paper sets on to reconstruct the date and origin of the text and explores the reason for the sudden appearance of the legend in medieval Hungary offering a possible explanation for the Sirmian "subplot" preserved in it.
