Description
Summary:My output from international network group 'The Foundations of the European Space II' (FESII), which investigated the interaction between local communities and supra-local power in the early medieval period on the fringes of the Frankish Empire. Drawing on archaeology, history and landscape approaches, this chapter focuses on the coastal island of Walcheren, situated in a key strategic location in the Scheldt estuary on the boundary between the Middle and West Frankish kingdoms, connecting the North Sea world with the wealthy Flanders region.
