Summary:In this paper I consider the status of vocative phrases in Latin. In particular I seek to establish the degree to which they can be said to belong to the syntax of any sentence with which they occur. In strong contrast to the traditional view, I argue that vocative phrases, which typically fulfil the function of expressing address, are not only pragmatically integrated into sentences which they accompany but are also syntactically integrated in them. I conclude with some discussion of the structural level at which this integration may be said to take place.
