description | This dissertation explores the complex dynamics of identity and belonging among Qeshmi Emiratis, whose ties span both coasts of the Arabian Gulf and various port cities around the Indian Ocean rim. With the establishment of modern nation-states in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Iran, Qeshmi individuals who resettled in the UAE faced the challenge of reconciling their (trans)national identities and adapting their social networks. Historically, the port cities in the Arabian Gulf served as vital nodes in the Indian Ocean world, facilitating the fluid movement of people across vast regions. However, the imposition of nation-state boundaries in the mid-20th century posed new challenges for these transregional communities, compelling them to renegotiate their identities. This research traces the lives and journeys of Qeshmi Emiratis from Qeshm Island to the UAE, examining how they integrated into the new nation-state amidst evolving geopolitical landscapes. It investigates how nation-building projects influenced the settlement and self-representation of Qeshmi migrants, highlighting their multilayered sense of belonging that bridges their homeland and adopted country. By examining historical, cultural, and geopolitical factors, this study sheds light on the resilience and adaptation of transregional communities in response to changing political landscapes in the Gulf region. |
