Description
Summary:This research study explored the impact of a teacher CPD intervention, based around attachment theory and relationships, on pupil motivation levels in the classroom. The study involved a small number of children from a cohort of Year 5 and two teachers in a mainstream school. The study aimed to find out:
· To what extent does a teacher CPD intervention improve teacher knowledge and application of attachment theory? · To what extent does knowledge of attachment theory improve teacher and pupil perceptions of teacher pupil relationships? · To what extent is pupil motivation affected by perceptions of teacher pupil relationships?
A motivation questionnaire was completed by the Year 5 cohort and the teachers completed a questionnaire to elicit knowledge of attachment theory and their perception of pupil teacher relationships. Semi-structured group interviews were completed with the pupils and teachers separately to explore areas raised in the questionnaires. The teachers participated in two training sessions focusing on attachment theory and teacher pupil relationships. Over the following five weeks, non participant observations were completed to observe changes in teacher practice. The same motivation questionnaires were then completed again by the Year 5 children and teachers to see the impact of the CPD intervention.
Preliminary findings imply that pupil motivation is affected by teacher pupil relationships. However, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that the CPD intervention improved pupil motivation levels. The observations and questionnaires revealed that teacher knowledge of attachment theory improved alongside their ability to implement strategies in their practice to develop pupil teacher relationships.
