| Summary: | This paper describes the results of the European Union funded EXTRA research project. Its main conclusion, is that despite the inconsistency of data in many European cities, it is evident that there are societal groups with low mobility and access to transport. These groups tend also to be low income groups which could be adversely affected if the price for the use of transport rose. The project analysed travel behaviour and travel demand elasticities of different social groups in a number of European cities in Finland, Great Britain, Italy, The Netherlands and Norway. EXTRA was a small project within the European Commission's road transport research programme whose objective is to produce a more sustainable transport policy. The objectives of EXTRA were to analyse the travel behaviour of groups that face a disadvantage in transport, and make a tentative judgement on what would be the repercussion upon them if market pricing were introduced on urban roads in Europe.
