description Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is the third important commodity crops in Malaysia. Cacao was considered to be a valuable crop after it had been introduced into Malaysia and its production increased until the year 1990. However, the production had decline leading to unstable cocoa industry in Malaysia. This declination in cocoa production was caused by several factors mainly the infestation of cocoa pod borer (Conopomorpha cramarella). Although cocoa pod borer (CPB) is the main pest of cocoa, many of its biological characteristics is still unknown. The study of cocoa pod borer (CPB) biological characteristic will lead us to develop new control methods for controlling CPB. These study aims are to isolate and identify the bacteria inside CPB alimentary tract. Understanding the bacterial community found in the digestive tract of CPB will give an insight on the possible role of the bacteria to CPB. Information is important in devising new arsenals to combat CPB. Isolated bacteria from adult CPB moth alimentary tract was cultured and sub-cultured. The growth of bacteria were observed and recorded based on morphology and gram-staining methods. MALDI-TOF identification was used to identify the bacteria colony. The bacteria that had been identified were Klebsiella pneumoniae, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Serratia marcescens and Klebsiella variicola. These above bacteria were assumed to possibly involved in digestion process as well as having pathogenic ability. This study had shown that there is presence of bacteria inside adult CPB alimentary tract. All of these isolated bacteria had managed to be identified and the objective of this study had been achieved.
