description Stachytarpeta jamaicensis 'purple' and Stachytarpeta jamaicensis 'white' were collected from Telupid, Sabah and tested on three different studies such as phytochemical constituents screening; quantification of total alkaloid, phenolic and flavonoids contents and finally determination of antimicrobial activities of plant extracts against four bacteria strains. Samples (leaf and root from both plants) were dried, ground and extracted using 70% (v/v) of methanol as extraction solvent. The extraction yield was found higher in methanolic leaf and root extracts of Stachytarpeta jamaicensis 'purple' at 40.32% and 39.32% respectively compared to Stachytarpeta jamaicensis 'white'. The screening of phytochemicals had shown leaf extracts of Stachytarpeta jamaicensis 'white' containe most of the phytochemical constituents such as alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, phytosterols, anthraquinones, diterpenes and volatile oils. Even though the total alkaloid content in all plant extracts were not significant; the total phenolic and flavonoid contents in leaf extract of Stachytarpeta jamaicensis 'white' were found to be the highest among the plant samples at 821.1 ± 28.8 mg GAE/g dry sample and 179.5 ± 8.8 mg QE/g dry sample respectively. For antimicrobial activity test, it was observed that root extract of Stachytarpeta jamaicensis 'white' showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi by disc diffusion method. Meanwhile leaf extract of Stachytarpeta jamaicensis 'purple' showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli. Root extract of Stachytarpeta jamaicensis 'white' was then used to perform minimum inhibitory test against S. aureus. The minimum inhibitory concentration for this plant extract against S. aureus was estimated at 0.78mg/ml.
