Summary: | Pulau Penyu or Turtle Island, which is located in Sandakan, is among one of the main attractions for local and international tourists. On this island, tourists can
witness how turtles land and lay eggs on the islands as well as to see the preservation efforts of the Wildlife Department and Sabah Parks. Turtles are among marine life that are known as vertebrate (animals with back bone) of the
reptilian family---similar to snakes, lizards, tortoise and tuntung. Studies have shown that turtles have existed since millions years ago that is during the Jurassic (145-208 million years) and dinosaur eras. Today, turtles are classified under endangered species because they are facing extinction due to human activities and have become among the significant assets in eco-tourism. The purpose of this paper is to observe and evaluate the effectiveness of the
techniques and preservation methods applied by Sabah Parks on Selingan Island and Gulisan Island of Sandakan in the effort to increase the number of turtles in Sabah from the perspectives of sailors and researchers using the Bajau
traditional boat called Parangkang.
