description An experiment was conducted to observe the swimming behavior of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) larvae under light and dark conditions. Digital video camera with infrared light was used to record the larval behavior under light and dark conditions. The larval swimming behavior was then being analyzed from the recorded video. Histology experiment also was carried out to observe their sensory organs that might affect their behavior. Results from this study shows that the African catfish larvae are more active in dark condition compare to the light condition. Therefore, the tendency of cannibalism is low in dark condition. The number of fish resting is higher in the light condition compare to the dark condition. Thus, the cannibalism is higher to occur in the light condition. The histology results shows that African catfish has five sensory organs which are eyes, taste buds, free neuromasts, olfactory organ and inner ear. Each sensory organ has different function and stimulation that might affect their behavior in light and dark conditions. Through this study, the larval rearing method can be improved in artificial rearing condition.
