description The paper aims to examine the strata (rural and urban), type of household (able-bodied and vulnerable), ethnic and gender differences in well-being among Malaysian households. Vulnerable households in this study were households that had at least one of the following criteria: income poor, elderly person, single mothers and/or disabled person. Data was taken from the Official Poverty Line Survey conducted in four Malaysian cities representing each region in Peninsular Malaysia. Using convenient sampling method, a total 516 households were interviewed face-to-face. Descriptive statistics such as mean, t-test and ANOVA test analyses were applied to examine the group differences between variables. The findings indicate strata and ethnic differences in well-being, in which urban and Malay ethnic households had higher level of well-being than rural, Indian and Chinese households. The results also revealed that among the three dimensions of well-being, Malay ethnic households had highest level of internal satisfaction than Indian and Chinese households; urban and Malay households had higher level of external satisfaction than rural, Chinese and Indian households; and finally, able-bodied households had higher level of economic status satisfaction than vulnerable households.
