Summary: | This study attempts to benefit from the application of Freudian psychoanalysis theory as a literary theory that shows the reader the inner world of the character and the author. This study is conducted to understand and explain the psychological and social factors in D. H. Lawrence's novel Sons and Lovers, which shows the development of the main characters in the novel. The study also shows the lack of communication among the family members as part of the new change in British society at that time. The current research chooses this novel due to its difference from traditional literary works, which deal with the characters from psychological and social aspects. The principal purpose of the study is to present the importance of psychology and its relationship with literature because literature displays human problems. In contrast, psychology tries to find the appropriate remedy. A qualitative method was used because it involves interpretation, meanings, feeling, relationships, and values following thematic analysis. The current study used Sigmund Freud‘s psychoanalytical theory as a tool to reveal the characters' inner world by giving more attention to psychological and social issues by analyzing the selected novel. By utilizing Sigmund Freud‘s psychoanalytical theory as a framework, the study concluded that the novel; ―Sons and Lovers‖ could be regarded as a psychological and social literary piece since the writer revealed the inner world of each character |
