Summary: | In this study, we investigate the effect of pulsed-low intensity ultrasound (PLIUS) on the proliferation, and extracellular matrix deposition in bovine chondrocytes (CP5) encapsulated in alginate. Hoechst 33258 assay for cell number, hydroxyproline assay for collagen content and dimethylamine blue (DMB) assay for GaG content were measured in cells exposed in PLIUS as compared to control. Cell exposed to PLIUS showed no significant effect on cell proliferation and GaG contents but collagen deposition appears at day 4. Alcian blue staining shows that GaG was deposited around the cells in both groups. These results suggest that PLIUS has no effect on cell proliferation but plays a role in collagen and GaG production. |
