Description
Summary:Knowledge on characteristics and correlation between soil properties is important in design and construction. The objectives of this study are to determine the engineering characteristics of granite residual soil found in Peninsular Malaysia. The granite residual soils can be classified as clay to silty sand with low to high plasticity. The natural moisture contents increase with depth and clay content, and range from 10% to 40 %. The specific gravity range from 2.50 to 2.74. Compression index, coefficient of consolidation and coefficient of permeability range from 0.11 to 0.42, 1.53 to 49.64 m2year-I and 1.1 x 10-11 to 9.86 x 10-9 ms-', respectively. The effective cohesions were between of 0 and 36.4 kNm-2 while the effective friction angles ranged from 16° 31°. Several correlations between residual soil characteristics were developed. These correlations can be indirectly used as guidelines in the preliminary design of structures.
