description The end of the Cold War, the rise of Western-Muslim conflict and the impact of globalization has led governments in developed and developing countries to address non-traditional threats (NTS) along with traditional threats (military). NTS threats, beside domestic in nature, are also characterized by cross-border threats such as terrorism, international crime, and human trafficking. The NTS threat level, however, is different at every level of society, including students. Therefore, this study evaluates students’ perceptions of NTS threats from selected universities in the northern Peninsular Malaysia, southern Thailand, and Yogyakarta Province. The study showed that the students perception of NTS threats are influenced by the political economy scenario faced by their respective countries. For students in the northern Peninsular Malaysia and Southern Thailand, drug trafficking is a major threat. While students in Yogyakarta, poverty are a major threat in the country.Students are also politically active in university and have an awareness of the law on freedom of expression and human rights. Most students felt that communism and Hudud Laws are not threatening national security. Finally, all respondents - Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia - are not satisfied with the government's efforts to address the NTS threats. In conclusion, students perceptions of NTS threats are influenced by their cultural background, ethnicity and religion as well as the current political economic situation in their respective countries.
