description | To develop knowledge in any field or discipline, a clear and correct approach and methodology is necessary.According to the history of Malay civilization in the Southeast Asia or Nusantara region, the Muslim scholars ('ulama') not only played a major role in developing a knowledgeable society but also worked hard in laying the foundation of the various intellectual disciplines that benefit their communities. The intellectual contribution and efforts of the 'ulama' are clearly demonstrated in their writings. The
Malay 'ulama' have used many different approaches in their writings which can be considered as priceless treasures to be examined and expanded or developed upon commensurable with the changing times and needs of the present community. Since Islam is based on the principle of Tawhid which asserts that there is only one God, Allah, it is not surprising that the earliest approach taken by the Malay 'ulama' is to lslamize the theological and ontological concepts of Hindu-Buddhist teachings prevalent in the
region. The Malay 'ulama' also standardized the Islamic terms in Arabic into Malay by preserving their original concepts and meanings. They also introduced the Arabic script to the Malays which created the Jawi script which has additional consonants peculiar to Malay, and wrote their works in this newly found Jawi script, and henceforth produced a rich legacy of Malay Jawi works on Islam.Shaykh Daud al-Fatani (1769-1 847) is one of the foremost Malay 'ulama' of the 18th century who is renowned for his writings in the various disciplines.Tawhid is one of the areas in which he wrote. This paper discusses the epistemological and ontological approaches used by Shaykh Daud al-Fatani in his important work, al-Durr al-Thamin, which is regarded as an influential work on Tawhid used by the Malay Nusantara Muslims since the 18th century.By examining the approaches used by Shaykh Daud, we hope to bring to light his contribution to the intellectual life of the Malays, specifically in Islamizing their belief system and worldview and in the development of their Malay-Muslim identity. |
