Engineering challenges of future particle accelerators
Published 2008“…The engineering challenges are immense. 30km-long straight tunnels must be drilled to house the accelerator, and components must be aligned and stabilised to microns over distances of kilometers. High-power superconducting niobium radio-frequency cavities will drive electron and positron beams to velocities approaching the speed of light. …”

A fast, custom FPGA-based signal processor and its applications to intra-train beam stabilisation
Published 2016“…Two examples of applications will also be presented: a position and angle bunch-by-bunch feedback system using strip-line beam position monitors to stabilise intra-train positional jitter to below the micron level with a latency less than 154 ns; and a phase feedforward system using RF cavity-based phase monitors to stabilise the downstream rms phase jitter to below 50 fs with a total latency less than the 380 ns beam time-of-flight.…”

An intra-pulse fast feedback system for a future linear collider
Published 2003“…The results of these tests with the NLCTA short and long-pulse beam are presented, demonstrating a linear response to the position of the 180 ns long-pulse beam: measurements show a time constant of ~1.5 ns and a precision of better than 20 microns. A novel BPM processor for use at X-band, making use of the difference-over-sum processing technique, is also presented in detail, with results given for both short and long-pulse beams.…”
