Reionization and beyond: detecting the peaks of the cosmological 21 cm signal by Mesinger, Andrei, Ewall-Wice, Aaron Michael, Hewitt, Jacqueline N

    Published 2019
“…There is increasing interest also in the pre-reionization epoch when the intergalactic medium (IGM) was heated by an early X-ray background. …”

Detecting the 21 cm forest in the 21 cm power spectrum by Ewall-Wice, Aaron Michael, Dillon, Joshua Shane, Mesinger, A., Hewitt, Jacqueline N

    Published 2019
“…Using semi-numerical simulations of the intergalactic medium and a semi-empirical source population, we show that the 21 cm forest dominates a distinctive region of k-space, k ≲ 0.5Mpc⁻¹. …”

Detection of cosmic structures using the bispectrum phase. II. First results from application to cosmic reionization using the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array by Ewall-Wice, Aaron Michael, Hewitt, Jacqueline N, Neben, Abraham Richard, Zheng, Haoxuan

    Published 2022
“…Here, we provide a demonstration of this technique on a subset of data from the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) to place approximate constraints on the brightness temperature of the intergalactic medium (IGM). From this limited data, at z=7.7 we infer "1σ"upper limits on the IGM brightness temperature to be ≤ 316 "pseudo"mK at κ =0.33 "pseudo"h Mpc-1 (data-limited) and ≤ 1000 "pseudo"mK at κ =0.875 "pseudo"h Mpc-1 (noise-limited). …”

Constraining high-redshift X-ray sources with next generation 21-cm power spectrum measurements by Mesinger, Andrei, Pober, Jonathan, Ewall-Wice, Aaron Michael, Hewitt, Jacqueline N, Dillon, Joshua Shane, Liu, Adrian Chi-Yan

    Published 2017
“…We use the Fisher matrix formalism and seminumerical simulations to derive quantitative predictions of the constraints that power spectrum measurements on next-generation interferometers, such as the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), will place on the characteristics of the X-ray sources that heated the high-redshift intergalactic medium. Incorporating observations between z = 5 and 25, we find that the proposed 331 element HERA and SKA phase 1 will be capable of placing ≲ 10 per cent constraints on the spectral properties of these first X-ray sources, even if one is unable to perform measurements within the foreground contaminated ‘wedge’ or the FM band. …”

    Published 2015
“…The separation of the faint cosmological background signal from bright astrophysical foregrounds remains one of the most daunting challenges of mapping the high-redshift intergalactic medium with the redshifted 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen. …”
