Altered task induced functional brain networks and small-world properties in autism by Tushar Chouhan, Melissa H. Black, Melissa H. Black, Melissa H. Black, Melissa H. Black, Melissa H. Black, Sonya Girdler, Sonya Girdler, Sonya Girdler, Sonya Girdler, Sonya Girdler, Sonya Girdler, Sven Bölte, Sven Bölte, Sven Bölte, Sven Bölte, Sven Bölte, Tele Tan, Tele Tan, Tele Tan, Cuntai Guan

    Published 2023-01-01
“…Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based functional brain networks were examined, including the investigation of differences in the time-varying whole-brain functional networks and the exploration of the task induced small-world properties.ResultsThe results showed statistically significant differences in the task-induced functional networks between autistic and non-autistic adults. Autistic adults compared to non-autistic adults showed a significant shift in the connectivity-based FER processing from the lower to the higher EEG frequency bands.DiscussionThese findings may provide evidence at a neural level for the notion that autistic individuals have a preference for bottom-up lower-level processing, or alterations in top-down global processing, potentially contributing to the FER difficulties observed in this population. …”

Excitatory/inhibitory imbalance in autism: the role of glutamate and GABA gene-sets in symptoms and cortical brain structure by Viola Hollestein, Geert Poelmans, Natalie J. Forde, Christian F. Beckmann, Christine Ecker, Caroline Mann, Tim Schäfer, Carolin Moessnang, Sarah Baumeister, Tobias Banaschewski, Thomas Bourgeron, Eva Loth, Flavio Dell’Acqua, Declan G. M. Murphy, Nicolaas A. Puts, Julian Tillmann, Tony Charman, Emily J. H. Jones, Luke Mason, Sara Ambrosino, Rosemary Holt, Sven Bölte, Jan K. Buitelaar, Jilly Naaijen

    Published 2023-01-01
“…The glutamate gene-set was associated with all autism symptom severity scores on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 (ADOS-2) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) within the autistic group. In adolescents and adults, brain regions with greater gene-expression of glutamate and GABA genes showed greater differences in CT between autistic and neurotypical control participants although in opposing directions. …”

No transfer of arousal from other’s eyes in Williams syndrome by Johan Lundin Kleberg, Astrid E. Z. Hallman, Martyna A. Galazka, Deborah M. Riby, Sven Bölte, Charlotte Willfors, Christine Fawcett, Ann Nordgren

    Published 2023-10-01
“…In WS, higher pupillary contagion was associated with lower autistic symptoms of social communication. Diminished synchronization of arousal may explain why individuals with WS have social challenges, whereas synchronization of arousal is not a necessary correlate of high social motivation.…”

Pre‐pragmatic language use in toddlerhood: Developmental antecedents, aetiological factors, and associations to autism by Maja Rudling, Ana Maria Portugal, Sven Bölte, Terje Falck‐Ytter

    Published 2023-03-01
“…In children with an elevated likelihood of ASD, decontextualized language use was negatively associated with autistic symptoms. Conclusions This study suggests that decontextualized language is developmentally associated with, yet dissociable from, more general language development measured as grammatical ability. …”

Associations between Elemental Metabolic Dynamics and Default Mode Network Functional Connectivity Are Altered in Autism by Paul Curtin, Janina Neufeld, Austen Curtin, Christine Austin, Johan Isaksson, Karl Lundin Remnelius, Hjalmar Nobel Norrman, Manish Arora, Sven Bölte

    Published 2023-01-01
“…Second, we found that associations between the DMN and elemental biomarkers, particularly involving phosphorus, calcium, manganese, and magnesium, differed significantly in autistic participants from control participants. In sum, these findings suggest that functional dynamics in elemental metabolism relate broadly to persistent patterns of functional connectivity in the DMN, and that these associations are altered in the emergence of autism.…”
