A study of application of western strategic planning model for small medium entrepreneurs in northern states of Malaysia
Published 2012“…The study examined whether small medium enterprise (SME) in the northern states of Malaysia do strategic planning and if they do, does the Wheelen and Hunger model ( 2008) applies so them .A total of 108 respondents which were from SMEs in Perlis, Kedah and Penang are participated in this research.Results of the study showed that SMEs do have strategic planning and more than half said that their strategic planning process resembled the strategic planning model of Wheelen and Hunger (2008).The strategic planning process of the SMEs was not much different from that of the Wheelen and Hunger (2008) model.…”

The strategic planning of SMES in Malaysia: A view of external environmental scanning
Published 2014“…The business world today is getting more competitive and many companies are looking for ways to survive in the market competition especially Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs).This research was aimed at investigating whether formal strategic planning is relevant to SMEs and whether the strategic planning model suggested by Wheel en and Hunger (2008) is applicable to SMEs in the Asian context and in particular the Malaysian context.The main focus was to determine how important external environment scanning was to SMEs in the Northern states of Malaysia and do SMEs perform the external environment scanning which resemble the Wheelen and Hunger (2008) strategic planning model.The sample of the research comprised of SMEs in the Northern states of Malaysia which covered Perlis, Kedah and Penang.The population of the samples was derived from the directory of SMEs from the website.A purposive sampling was used and a cross sectional study was conducted where data was collected over a period of weeks through mail questionnaire and individual administrated questionnaires.The result of the research suggested that most SMEs do have some form of formal strategic planning.Further to this, it also indicated that environment scanning is getting more attention from the SME in today’s competitive market.The findings suggested that most of the SMEs do have strategic planning which resembles the Wheel en and Hunger Strategic Planning Model.There is a strong indication that the model of Wheel en and Hunger Strategic Planning is applicable to the practice of SMEs in the Northern region in Malaysia.…”

The strategic planning of SMEs in Malaysia: Types of strategies in the aftermath of economic downturn
Published 2012“…The research here looks at whether formal strategic planning is relevant to SMEs and if the Wheelen and Hunger (2008) strategic planning model is applicable to SMEs in the Asian context.For this paper, the aim is to determine the types of strategies that SMEs used in their planning in the period after the economic downturn in 2008-2009.The sample comprised of SMEs in the northern region of Malaysia which covers Perlis, Kedah and Penang and data was collected between September 2010 and December 2010.The findings show that most of the SMEs have strategic planning which resembles the Wheelen and Hunger strategic planning model suggesting that the model is applicable to SMEs in Malaysia.In addition, SMEs seems to prefer proactive strategies such as corporate growth strategies and differentiation for their business strategies.…”

The mediating impact of occupational stress on leadership style and job performance
