Importance of within-lake processes in affecting the dynamics of dissolved organic carbon and dissolved organic and inorganic nitrogen in an Adirondack forested lake/watershed
Published 2016-05-01“…We compared long-term patterns of concentrations and fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic (DON) and inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in aquatic ecosystems of the Arbutus Lake watershed to evaluate how a lake nested in a forested watershed affects the sources (e.g., production) and sinks (e.g., retention) of DOC and DON in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, USA. We observed no significant long-term changes of DOC and DON in the lake outlet since 1983 and 1994, respectively. …”

Acid-base characteristics of the Grass Pond watershed in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, USA: interactions among soil, vegetation and surface waters
Published 2013-07-01“…Grass Pond watershed is located within the southwestern Adirondack Mountain region of New York State, USA. This region receives some of the highest rates of acidic deposition in North America and is particularly sensitive to acidic inputs due to many of its soils having shallow depths and being generally base poor. …”

Elevational Gradients Impose Dispersal Limitation on Streptomyces
Published 2022-05-01“…We characterized Streptomyces diversity at local spatial scales (100 to 3,000 m) in two temperate forest sites located in the Adirondacks region of New York State: Woods Lake (<100 m elevation change), and Whiteface Mountain (>1,000 m elevation change). …”

Mercury in the soil of two contrasting watersheds in the eastern United States.
Published 2014-01-01“…A strong linear relation was evident at McTier Creek (r(2) = 0.68; p<0.001), but a linear relation at Fishing Brook was weak (r(2) = 0.13; p<0.001) and highly variable across the soil organic matter content range, suggesting excess Hg binding capacity in the Adirondack soil. These results suggest greater total Hg turnover time in Adirondack soil than that of the Coastal Plain, and that future declines in stream water Hg concentrations driven by declines in atmospheric Hg deposition will be more gradual and prolonged in the Adirondacks.…”

Quantifying the Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of a Mechanized Shelterwood Harvest Producing Both Sawtimber and Woodchips
Published 2022-01-01“…A life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted on a winter shelterwood harvest occurring in the Adirondacks of upstate New York. Primary data were collected daily throughout the operation and used to model the impact attributed to producing clean chips and logs for delivery to a pulp mill and sawmill, respectively. …”

ASSESSING RED PINE SEEDLINGS USING UAV POINT CLOUDS AND FIELD-VERIFIED DATA
Published 2022-07-01“…This study assessed the potential of using digital aerial photogrammetry point clouds and UAV acquired high-resolution imagery to estimate red pine seedlings' height in Adirondacks, New York. Seedling's location, height, crown width, and diameter were measured from 16 fixed area sample plots, and multispectral imagery was acquired with DJI Matrice 100- UAV fitted with Micasense RedEdge-M camera. …”

Can the eastern red‐backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus) persist in an acidified landscape?
Published 2016-04-01“…The strongest negative predictor of P. cinereus abundance was the presence of dusky salamanders (Desmognathus spp.), which were most abundant in the western Adirondacks. Our results indicate that P. cinereus occupies a wider range of soil pH than has been previously thought, which has implications for their functional role in forest food webs and nutrient cycles in acid‐impaired ecosystems. …”
