Lower diastolic tension may be indicative of higher proarrhythmic propensity in failing human cardiomyocytes
Published 2024“…We constructed, calibrated and validated populations of human electromechanical models of failing cardiomyocytes, that were able to reproduce the prolonged action potential, reduced contractility and diastolic dysfunction as observed in human data, as well as increased propensity to proarrhythmic incidents such as early afterdepolarization and beat-to-beat alternans. Our simulation data reveal that proarrhythmic incidents tend to occur in failing myocytes with lower diastolic tension, rather than with lower contractility, due to the relative preserved SERCA and sodium calcium exchanger current. …”

Hemodynamic impacts of entrainment of heart rate and stride rate
Published 2012-06-01“…Twenty-three apparently healthy subjects performed treadmill running in three different conditions, one that the step rate was matched with the heart rate (matched condition), one that the step rate was ~10 steps greater or lower than heart rate (unmatched conditions). Beat-by-beat blood pressure was measured using the finger plethysmography, and stroke volume and cardiac output were calculated using the validated Model Flow method. …”

Bidirectional Ventricular Tachycardia: Challenges and Solutions
Published 2022-06-01“…Ahmed Almarzuqi,1 Shane Kimber,1 Kenneth Quadros,1 Janek Senaratne1,2 1Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada; 2Department of Critical Care Medicine, University of Alberta, Edmonton, CanadaCorrespondence: Janek Senaratne, Tel +1 (780) 463-2184, Fax +1 (780) 450-8359, Email janeks@ualberta.caAbstract: Bidirectional ventricular tachycardia (BiVT) is a rare form of ventricular tachycardia that manifests on surface electrocardiogram by dual QRS morphologies alternating on a beat-to-beat basis. It was first reported in the 1920s as a complication of digoxin, and since then, it has been reported in other conditions including fulminant myocarditis, sarcoidosis, catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, and Andersen-Tawil syndrome. …”
