Catastrophic Regime Shift in Water Reservoirs and São Paulo Water Supply Crisis.
Published 2015-01-01“…These results highlight the broader aspect that reservoir management must account for their intrinsic bistability, and should benefit from dynamical systems theory. Our case study illustrates the catastrophic consequences of failing to do so.…”

Coevolving institutions and the paradox of informal constraints
Published 2021“…In this paper, we propose a new theory that is: grounded in institutions as coevolving sources of economic growth rather than as rules constraining growth; and deployed in dynamical systems theory rather than game theory. We show that with our approach some long-standing problems are resolved, in particular, the paradoxical and perplexingly pervasive influence of informal constraints on the long-run character of economies.…”

A patchy model for tick population dynamics with patch-specific developmental delays
Published 2022-03-01“…We obtain a coupled system of four delay differential equations with two delays, and we examine how the dynamical behaviours depend on patch-specific basic reproduction numbers and host mobility by using singular perturbation analyses and monotone dynamical systems theory. Our theoretical results and numerical simulations provide useful insights for tick population control strategies.…”

Organization of biogeochemical nitrogen pathways with switch-like adjustment in fluctuating soil redox conditions
Published 2017-01-01“…Here, we address this question using a kinetic modelling approach coupled with dynamical systems theory and microbial genomics. We show that alternative biochemical pathways play a key role in keeping nitrogen conversion and conservation properties invariant in fluctuating environments. …”

Automated Techniques for the Qualitative Analysis of Ecological Models: Continuous Models
Published 1997-06-01“…In this paper, I demonstrate how various computer packages can aid qualitative analyses by implementing techniques from dynamical systems theory. Because computer software is used to obtain the results, the techniques can be used by nonmathematicians as well as mathematicians. …”

Correlation-based characterisation of time-varying dynamical complexity in the Earth's magnetosphere
Published 2013-11-01“…The resulting temporal complexity profile has been explored using several approaches from applied statistics, dynamical systems theory and statistical mechanics. Here, we propose an alternative way of looking at time-varying dynamical complexity of nonlinear geophysical time series utilising subtle but significant changes in the linear autocorrelation structure of the recorded data. …”

A Quasi-Steady-State Approximation to the Basic Target-Cell-Limited Viral Dynamics Model with a Non-Cytopathic Effect
Published 2018-01-01“…Analysis of previously published target-cell limited viral dynamic models for pathogens such as HIV, hepatitis, and influenza generally rely on standard techniques from dynamical systems theory or numerical simulation. We use a quasi-steady-state approximation to derive an analytic solution for the model with a non-cytopathic effect, that is, when the death rates of uninfected and infected cells are equal. …”
