Structural Inheritance Controls Strain Distribution During Early Continental Rifting, Rukwa Rift by Folarin Kolawole, Folarin Kolawole, Thomas B. Phillips, Estella A. Atekwana, Christopher A.-L. Jackson

    Published 2021-08-01
“…We utilize aeromagnetic data that image the Precambrian Chisi Shear Zone (CSZ) and bounding terranes, and interpretations of 2-D seismic reflection data to show that, during the earliest rift phase (Permo-Triassic ‘Karoo’): 1) the rift was defined by the Lupa border fault, which exploited colinear basement terrane boundaries, and a prominent intra-basinal fault cluster (329° ± 9.6) that trends parallel to and whose location was controlled by the CSZ (326°); 2) extensional strain in the NW section of the rift was accommodated by both the intra-basinal fault cluster and the border fault, where the intra-basinal faulting account for up to 64% of extension; in the SE where the CSZ is absent, strain is primarily focused on the Lupa Fault. …”

Climatic and topographic changes since the Miocene influenced the diversification and biogeography of the tent tortoise (Psammobates tentorius) species complex in Southern Africa by Zhongning Zhao, Neil Heideman, Phillip Bester, Adriaan Jordaan, Margaretha D. Hofmeyr

    Published 2020-11-01
“…The distribution of Psammobates tentorius (Kuhl, 1820) covers two of the 25 biodiversity hotspots in the world, the Succulent Karoo and Cape Floristic Region. The highly diverged P. tentorius represents an excellent model species for exploring biogeographic and radiation patterns of reptiles in Southern Africa. …”

Triassic pentadactyl tracks from the Los Menucos Group (Río Negro province, Patagonia Argentina): possible constraints on the autopodial posture of Gondwanan trackmakers by Paolo Citton, Ignacio Díaz-Martínez, Silvina de Valais, Carlos Cónsole-Gonella

    Published 2018-08-01
“…The footprints under study are compared with Pentasauropus from the Upper Triassic lower Elliot Formation (Stormberg Group) of the Karoo Basin (Lesotho, southern Africa). Some track features suggest a therapsid-grade synapsid as the potential trackmaker, to be sought among anomodont dicynodonts (probably Kannemeyeriiformes). …”

Major, trace element and Sr-Nd isotope evidence for a sublithospheric mantle source for the Umkondo large igneous province by Ben Hayes, Lewis D. Ashwal, Khulekani B. Khumalo, Linda M. Iaccheri

    Published 2024-01-01
“…There is also a paucity of high-Ti rocks in the Umkondo province that may reflect limited direct melting of the lithospheric mantle or that they are simply not as well-preserved in this province compared to the Karoo province. The similar trace element and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions of the Umkondo sills in southern Africa with the Borgmassivet sills in Antarctica support the concept that the Kalahari craton and Grunehogna terrane were adjoined at 1.11 Ga. …”
