Multifunctional iron-biochar composites for the removal of potentially toxic elements, inherent cations, and hetero-chloride from hydraulic fracturing wastewater by Yuqing Sun, Iris K.M. Yu, Daniel C.W. Tsang, Xinde Cao, Daohui Lin, Linling Wang, Nigel J.D. Graham, Daniel S. Alessi, Michael Komárek, Yong Sik Ok, Yujie Feng, Xiang-Dong Li

    Published 2019-03-01
“…A series of iron-biochar (Fe-BC) composites with different Fe/BC impregnation mass ratios (0.5:1, 1:1, and 2:1) were prepared by mixing forestry wood waste-derived BC powder with an aqueous FeCl3 solution and subsequently pyrolyzing them at 1000 °C in a N2-purged tubular furnace. The porosity, surface morphology, crystalline structure, and interfacial chemical behavior of the Fe-BC composites were characterized, revealing that Fe chelated with CO bonds as COFe moieties on the BC surface, which were subsequently reduced to a CC bond and nanoscale zerovalent Fe (nZVI) during pyrolysis. …”

Distinct Potentially Adaptive Accumulation of Truncation Mutations in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi and Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi A by Stephy Mol Robinson, Vyshakh Rajachandran, Suchismita Majumdar, Satabdi Saha, Sneha Das, Sujay Chattopadhyay

    Published 2022-06-01
“…It is frequently believed to result from reductive evolutionary processes allowing purging of superfluous traits. However, several works have demonstrated that, similar to the occurrences of inactivating nonsynonymous (i.e., amino acid replacement) mutations under positive selection pressures, truncation mutations can also be adaptive where specific traits deleterious in particular environmental conditions need to be inactivated for survival. …”

A Singlet Oxygen Photogeneration and Luminescence Study of Unsymmetrically Substituted Mesoporphyrinic Compounds by Anabela Sousa Oliveira, Dumitru Licsandru, Rica Boscencu, Radu Socoteanu, Veronica Nacea, Luis Filipe Vieira Ferreira

    Published 2009-01-01
“…All the porphyrins presented very similar fluorescence lifetimes (mean values of τS (with O2, air equilibrated) = 9.6 ± 0.3 nanoseconds and (without O2, argon purged) = 10.1 ± 0.6 nanoseconds, resp.). The phosphorescence emission was found to be negligible for this series of unsymmetrically substituted mesoporphyrins, but an E-type, thermally activated, delayed fluorescence process was proved to occur at room temperature.…”

Feasibility of using an electronic nose for quality assessment of air in poultry slaughterhouse rendering plants by Ali Farmanesh, Seyed Saeid Mohtasebi, Mahmoud Omid

    Published 2017-12-01
“…Results and discussion: Observation of sensor’s response until steady state with aim of reducing consumption of time and oxygen, showed that 30 seconds to reach sensors to their baseline (baseline time), 100 seconds to contact the vapors with sensors (injection and response time) and 40 seconds to clear the sensors (purging time) were suitable . Correlation analysis of the sensors showed that some of the sensors had a correlation higher than 0.85. …”
