Alpha reactivity to complex sounds differs during REM sleep and wakefulness. by Perrine Ruby, Camille Blochet, Jean-Baptiste Eichenlaub, Olivier Bertrand, Dominique Morlet, Aurélie Bidet-Caulet

    Published 2013-01-01
“…These results show that complex sounds have a different effect on the alpha power during wakefulness (decrease) and during REM sleep (increase) and that OWN induce a specific effect in these two states. …”

Brainstem and spinal cord circuitry regulating REM sleep and muscle atonia. by Martina Krenzer, Christelle Anaclet, Ramalingam Vetrivelan, Nishang Wang, Linh Vong, Bradford B Lowell, Patrick M Fuller, Jun Lu

    Published 2011-01-01
“…Our results show that glutamatergic neurons of the sublaterodorsal nucleus (SLD) and glycinergic/GABAergic interneurons of the spinal ventral horn contribute to REM atonia, whereas a separate population of glutamatergic neurons in the caudal laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (cLDT) and SLD are important for REM sleep generation. Our results further suggest that presynaptic GABA release in the cLDT-SLD, ventrolateral periaqueductal gray matter (vlPAG) and lateral pontine tegmentum (LPT) are not critically involved in REM sleep control. These findings reveal the critical and divergent in vivo role of pontine glutamate and spinal cord GABA/glycine in the regulation of REM sleep and atonia and suggest a possible etiological basis for REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD).…”

Neurobehavioral Associations with NREM and REM Sleep Architecture in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder by Jennifer Nguyen, Bo Zhang, Ellen Hanson, Dimitrios Mylonas, Kiran Maski

    Published 2022-08-01
“…Objective: Insomnia and daytime behavioral problems are common issues in pediatric autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet specific underlying relationships with NonRapid Eye Movement sleep (NREM) and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep architecture are understudied. We hypothesize that REM sleep alterations (REM%, REM EEG power) are associated with more internalizing behaviors and NREM sleep deficits (N3%; slow wave activity (SWA) 0.5–3 Hz EEG power) are associated with increased externalizing behaviors in children with ASD vs. typical developing controls (TD). …”
