Both librettos are inspired by historical events documented by the Roman historian Livy (59 BC – AD 17), recounting the overthrow of the last Tarquin king and the subsequent siege of Rome by Porsenna who tried to help restore the Tarquin dynasty and, according to Livy, failed to do so. …”
