A análise funcional mostrou que a alta frequência diária com que os participantes jogam, e os efeitos prejudiciais a ela associados, pode ser esclarecida pela inter-relação entre contingências de reforçamento positivo e negativo, que se dá na forma de um ciclo vicioso: quanto mais os participantes jogam mais reforçadores naturais e arbitrários produzem no contexto virtual e mais eventos aversivos sociais produzem no ambiente não-virtual, o que acaba fortalecendo o próprio jogar como esquiva do ambiente não-virtual. …”
