Characteristics of surface physical and biogeochemical parameters within mesoscale eddies in the Southern Ocean by Q. Liu, Q. Liu, Y. Liu, X. Li

    Published 2023-12-01
“…<p>Using satellite sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll <span class="inline-formula"><i>a</i></span> (Chl <span class="inline-formula"><i>a</i></span>) as well as observation-based reconstruction of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and partial pressure of CO<span class="inline-formula">2</span> (<span class="inline-formula"><i>p</i></span>CO<span class="inline-formula">2)</span> from 1996 to 2015, we investigate the modulation mechanisms of eddies on surface physical and biogeochemical parameters in the Southern Ocean (SO). About one-quarter of eddies are observed to be “abnormal” (cold anticyclonic and warm cyclonic eddies) in the SO, which show opposite SST signatures to “normal” eddies (warm anticyclonic and cold cyclonic eddies). …”

Atmospheric isoprene measurements reveal larger-than-expected Southern Ocean emissions by Valerio Ferracci, James Weber, Conor G. Bolas, Andrew D. Robinson, Fiona Tummon, Pablo Rodríguez-Ros, Pau Cortés-Greus, Andrea Baccarini, Roderic L. Jones, Martí Galí, Rafel Simó, Julia Schmale, Neil. R. P. Harris

    Published 2024-03-01
“…Here we present the analysis of isoprene concentrations in the atmosphere measured across the Southern Ocean over 4 months in the summertime. Some of the highest concentrations ( >500 ppt) originated from the marginal ice zone in the Ross and Amundsen seas, indicating the marginal ice zone is a significant source of isoprene at high latitudes. …”

Contrasting life cycles of Southern Ocean pteropods alter their vulnerability to climate change by Jessie Gardner, Jessie Gardner, Victoria L. Peck, Dorothee C. E. Bakker, Geraint A. Tarling, Clara Manno

    Published 2023-05-01
“…Pteropods are a key part of biogeochemical cycling and epipelagic food webs in the Southern Ocean. However, shelled pteropods are vulnerable to climate change, due to their aragonite shells being particularly sensitive to ocean acidification. …”

The past, present and future distribution of a deep-sea shrimp in the Southern Ocean by Zeenatul Basher, Mark J. Costello

    Published 2016-02-01
“…Shrimps have a widespread distribution across the shelf, slope and seamount regions of the Southern Ocean. Studies of Antarctic organisms have shown that individual species and higher taxa display different degrees of sensitivity and adaptability in response to environmental change. …”
