Star-forming galaxies in the epoch of reionization
Published 2012“…<p>This work presents a search for galaxies at 6.5 < z < 9.8 based on the Lyman-break technique, using the latest HST WFC3 near-infrared data covering ∼ 150 arcmin^2 of the GOODS-South field. …”

Cosmology with a Primordial Scaling Field
Published 1997“…We find that, for $\Omega_\phi\simeq 0.08-0.12$, these models are consistent with large angle cosmic microwave background anisotropies as detected by COBE, the linear mass variance as compiled from galaxy surveys, big bang nucleosynthesis, the abundance of rich clusters and constraints from the Lyman-$\alpha$ systems at high redshift. Given the simplicity of the model, its theoretical motivation and its success in matching observations, we argue that it should be taken on a par with other currently viable models of structure formation.…”

Constraining the bright-end of the UV luminosity function for z approximate to 7-9 galaxies: results from CANDELS/GOODS-South
Published 2013“…The recent Hubble Space Telescope near-infrared imaging with the Wide-Field Camera #3 (WFC 3) of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey South (GOODS-S) field in the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) programme covering nearly 100 arcmin2, along with already existing Advanced Camera for Surveys optical data, makes possible the search for bright galaxy candidates at redshift z≈7-9 using the Lyman break technique. We present the first analysis of z'-drop z≈7 candidate galaxies in this area, finding 19 objects. …”

VIRUS: Production of a massively replicated 33k fiber integral field spectrograph for the upgraded Hobby-Eberly Telescope
Published 2012“…The main motivator for VIRUS is to map the evolution of dark energy for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX‡) using 0.8M Lyman-α emitting galaxies as tracers. The full VIRUS array is due to be deployed by early 2014 and will provide a powerful new facility instrument for the HET, well suited to the survey niche of the telescope. …”

A Census of the LyC Photons that Form the UV Background During Reionization
Published 2018“…While at very early cosmic times low-mass, metal-poor haloes provide most of the Lyman continuum photons, their contribution decreases steadily with time. …”

Spectroscopic confirmation of two luminous galaxies at a redshift of 14
Published 2024“…The spectra reveal ultraviolet continua with prominent Lyman-α breaks but no detected emission lines. This discovery proves that luminous galaxies were already in place 300 million years after the Big Bang and are more common than what was expected before JWST. …”

New constraints on the co-moving star formation rate in the redshift interval 6
Published 2006“…In the second component of our research, we report on the results of two surveys for weak Lyman emitters and z- and J-band dropouts highly-magnified by foreground lensing clusters. …”

Evolved galaxies at z > 1.5 from the Gemini Deep Deep survey: The formation epoch of massive stellar systems
Published 2004“…We argue that most of the red galaxies are not descendants of the typical z ∼ 3 Lyman break galaxies. Galaxies associated with luminous submillimeter sources have the requisite star formation rates to be the progenitor population. …”

The physics of multiphase gas flows: fragmentation of a radiatively cooling gas cloud in a hot wind
Published 2021“…This physics is, however, necessary to reliably model observed column densities and covering fractions of Lyman α haloes, high-velocity clouds, and broad-line regions of active galactic nuclei.…”

Mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopy of the southern H II region RCW 38
Published 1999“…Whilst the star, or star cluster, IRS2 is ultimately responsible for the observed thermal and ionic emission, the relatively uniform dust temperature implies that the bulk of the dust heating in the region is provided by resonantly trapped Lyman α photons, rather than direct stellar photons. …”

Radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of thermally-driven disc winds in X-ray binaries: A direct comparison to GRO J1655-40
Published 2018“…The Fe XXV and Fe XXVI Lyman α absorption line profiles observed in this state are slightly stronger than those predicted by our simulations but the qualitative agreement between observed and simulated outflow properties means that thermal driving is a viable mechanism for powering the disc winds seen in soft-state LMXBs.…”

Spitzer constraints on the stellar populations of Ly alpha-emitting galaxies at z=3.1
Published 2008“…Comparing the IRAC colors and magnitudes of the LAEs to z ∼ 3 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) shows that the IRAC-detected LAEs lie at the faint blue end of the LBG color-magnitude distribution, suggesting that IRAC-detected LAEs may be the low-mass extension of the LBG population. …”

Published 2017“…Material and methods A systematic search identified publications providing duodenum dose-volume histogram (DVH) statistics for clinical studies of conventionally-fractionated radiotherapy. Values for the Lyman-Kutcher-Burman (LKB) NTCP model were derived through sum-squared-error minimisation and using leave-one-out cross-validation. …”
