Overcoming persistent challenges in putting environmental flow policy into practice: a systematic review and bibliometric analysis
Published 2023-01-01“…The lack of adequate hydrological data ( n = 24) and ecological data ( n = 28) were among the most mentioned, and ultimately lead to difficulties in starting or continuing monitoring/adaptive management ( n = 28) efforts. The lack of resource/capacity ( n = 21), experimentation ( n = 19), regulatory enforcement ( n = 17), and differing authorities involved ( n = 18) were also recurrent problems, driven by the deficiencies in the relative importance given to e-flows when facing other human priorities. …”

The reliability and conservation value of ranger-collected data on elephant poaching
Published 2021“…Managers felt that management based on intuition, experience and more reactive data-use was more familiar and dependable, and therefore did not embrace data-based adaptive management.

For ranger-based monitoring to contribute effectively to biodiversity conservation, practitioners and scientists must acknowledge, understand, and account for uncertainty in both monitoring data and the behaviour of those collecting and using it. …”

Groundwater sustainability: a review of the interactions between science and policy
Published 2020-01-01“…We conclude that effective groundwater sustainability policy implementation requires an iterative scientific evaluation that (i) engages stakeholders in a participatory process through collaborative modeling and social learning; (ii) provides improved understanding of the coevolving scenarios between surface water-groundwater systems, ecosystems, and human activities; and (iii) acknowledges and addresses uncertainty in our scientific knowledge and the diversity of societal preferences using multi-model uncertainty analysis and adaptive management. Although the development of such a transdisciplinary research approach, which connects policy, science, and practice for groundwater sustainability evaluation, is still in its infancy worldwide, we find that research towards groundwater sustainability is growing at a much faster rate than groundwater research as a whole.…”
