The impact of FDI on haze pollution: “Pollution paradise” or “pollution halo?”--Spatial analysis of PM2.5 concentration raster data in 283 cities by Yanbo Liu, Yanbo Liu, Mingshun Guo

    Published 2023-03-01
“…This paper constructs a spatial econometric model based on the environmental Kuznets curve to examine the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on urban haze pollution in Chinese cities. The evidence from the raster data of PM2.5 concentration in MODIS and MISR shows that there is a significant spatial correlation between haze pollution and FDI in Chinese cities, which is expressed as a spatial spillover effect; FDI in Chinese mainland cities reduces haze pollution, which confirms the “pollution halo hypothesis”; using instrumental variable estimation, the above conclusions are still robust; The total effect of FDI on haze pollution is negative, and the total effect can be decomposed into scale effect, technology effect and structural effect; FDI increases urban haze pollution through scale effects and structural effect, but decreases urban haze pollution through technology effects; the environmental Kuznets curve exists in urban haze pollution in China, i.e., there is an inverted “U” relationship between economic development and haze pollution. …”

Particle phase state and aerosol liquid water greatly impact secondary aerosol formation: insights into phase transition and its role in haze events by X. Meng, Z. Wu, Z. Wu, J. Chen, Y. Qiu, T. Zong, M. Song, J. Lee, M. Hu, M. Hu

    Published 2024-02-01
“…These results highlight phase transition as a key factor initiating the positive feedback loops between ALW and secondary aerosol formation during haze episodes over the North China Plain. Accurate predictions of secondary aerosol formation necessitate explicit consideration of the particle phase state in chemical transport models.…”

PM2.5 diminution and haze events over Delhi during the COVID-19 lockdown period: an interplay between the baseline pollution and meteorology by Surendra K. Dhaka, Chetna, Vinay Kumar, Vivek Panwar, A. P. Dimri, Narendra Singh, Prabir K. Patra, Yutaka Matsumi, Masayuki Takigawa, Tomoki Nakayama, Kazuyo Yamaji, Mizuo Kajino, Prakhar Misra, Sachiko Hayashida

    Published 2020-08-01
“…Notably, events of enhanced PM2.5 levels (300–400 µg m−3) were observed during night and early morning hours in the first week of April after air temperatures fell close to the dew-point (~ 15–17 °C). A haze formation mechanism is suggested through uplifting of fine particles, which is reinforced by condensation of moisture following the sunrise. …”

Increasing persistent haze in Beijing: potential impacts of weakening East Asian winter monsoons associated with northwestern Pacific sea surface temperature trends by L. Pei, L. Pei, Z. Yan, Z. Yan, Z. Sun, S. Miao, Y. Yao

    Published 2018-03-01
“…Over the past decades, Beijing, the capital city of China, has encountered increasingly frequent persistent haze events (PHE). While the increased pollutant emissions are considered as the most important reason, changes in regional atmospheric circulations associated with large-scale climate warming also play a role. …”

Aerosol Vertical Structure and Optical Properties during Two Dust and Haze Episodes in a Typical Valley Basin City, Lanzhou of Northwest China by Junyang Ma, Jianrong Bi, Bowen Li, Di Zhu, Xiting Wang, Zhaozhao Meng, Jinsen Shi

    Published 2024-03-01
“…The profile of ozone concentration exhibited a prominent two-layer structure (0.60–1.40 km and 0.10–0.30 km), and both concentrations at two heights always remained at high levels (60~72 μg/m3) during the entire haze event. Conversely, surface ozone concentration showed a significant decrease during severe haze period, with the peak value of 20~30 μg/m3, which was much smaller than that before haze pollution (~80 μg/m3 on 30 December). …”
