Stable Isotope Analysis of Specimens of Opportunity Reveals Ocean-Scale Site Fidelity in an Elusive Whale Species by Kerri J. Smith, Kerri J. Smith, Clive N. Trueman, Christine A. M. France, Jed P. Sparks, Andrew C. Brownlow, Andrew C. Brownlow, Michael Dähne, Nicholas J. Davison, Guðmundur Guðmundsson, Kamal Khidas, Kamal Khidas, Andrew C. Kitchener, Bram W. Langeveld, Véronique Lesage, Hanneke J. M. Meijer, Hanneke J. M. Meijer, John J. Ososky, Richard C. Sabin, Zena L. Timmons, Gísli A. Víkingsson, Frederick W. Wenzel, Markus J. Peterson

    Published 2021-05-01
“…Specimens of opportunity, such as salvaged carcasses or museum specimens, are a valuable source of fundamental biological and ecological information on data-deficient, elusive species, increasing knowledge of biodiversity, habitat and range, and population structure. Stable isotope analysis is a powerful indirect tool that can be used to infer foraging behavior and habitat use retrospectively from archived specimens. …”

The potential of stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis of foxtail and broomcorn millets for investigating ancient farming systems by Dong, Y, Bi, X, Wu, R, Belfield, EJ, Harberd, NP, Christensen, BT, Charles, M, Bogaard, A

    Published 2022
“…Previous research on major C3 crops in western Eurasia demonstrated the potential of stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis of charred archaeobotanical remains to reveal the management of water and manure, respectively. …”

Connected in diversity: Isotopic analysis refines provenance for Islamic plant-ash glass from the eastern Silk Roads by Qin-Qin Lü, Hassan Basafa, Julian Henderson

    Published 2023-12-01
“…Here, we investigate the occurrence and organization of plant-ash glass production in the eastern continental Islamic region, focusing on an 11th–12th century assemblage unearthed in Shadyakh, Nishapur, Iran. Through Sr-Nd isotope analysis and by examining geochemical contexts and mixing patterns, we find that distinct silica and ash sources originating from Tigris-Euphrates Basin, Central Asia, and potentially Iran were used to make these objects. …”

Animal Management at the Ancient Metropolis of Teotihuacan, Mexico: Stable Isotope Analysis of Leporid (Cottontail and Jackrabbit) Bone Mineral. by Andrew D Somerville, Nawa Sugiyama, Linda R Manzanilla, Margaret J Schoeninger

    Published 2016-01-01
“…This study examines the human-leporid (cottontail and jackrabbit) relationship at the pre-Hispanic (AD 1-550) city of Teotihuacan in the Basin of Mexico and tests the hypothesis that leporids were managed or bred for food and secondary products within the urban core. We use stable isotope analysis (δ13Capatite and δ18Oapatite) of 134 leporid specimens from five archaeological contexts within the city and 13 modern specimens from across central Mexico to quantify aspects of leporid diet and ecology. …”
