Geometric regularity in webs of non‐orb‐weaving spiders
Published 2023-03-01“…Finally, we evaluated the presence or absence of geometrically regular web elements across the spider tree of life. We found reports of regular webs in 31 spider families, including 20 families that are not orb weavers and hypothesize that the two basic aspects of regularity (parallel lines spaced at regular intervals, and radial lines spaced at regular angles) probably appeared many times in the evolution of spiders.…”

A Transcriptomic Approach to the Recruitment of Venom Proteins in a Marine Annelid
Published 2021-01-01“…Indeed, the phylogenetic models of mixed or individual toxins do not follow the expected eumetazoan tree-of-life and highlight that the recruitment of gene products for a role in venom systems is complex.…”

Genomic and metagenomic insights into the microbial community of a thermal spring
Published 2019-01-01“…A comparative genomic analysis of 72 isolates and 30 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) revealed that most isolates and MAGs belonged to new species or higher taxonomic ranks widely distributed in the microbial tree of life. Average nucleotide identity (ANI) values calculated for each isolated or assembled genome showed that 10 genomes belonged to known bacterial species (> 95% ANI), 36 genomes (including 1 MAG) had ANI values ranging 85–92.5% and could be assigned as undescribed species belonging to known genera, while the remaining 55 genomes had lower ANI values (< 85%). …”

Structure and function of the vacuolar Ccc1/VIT1 family of iron transporters and its regulation in fungi
Published 2020-01-01“…New sequenced genomes and bioinformatic tools are facilitating the functional characterization, evolution and ecological relevance of metabolic pathways and homeostatic networks across the Tree of Life. Sequence analysis shows that Ccc1/VIT1 homologs are widely distributed among organisms with the exception of animals. …”

Thermophiles; or, the Modern Prometheus: The Importance of Extreme Microorganisms for Understanding and Applying Extracellular Electron Transfer
Published 2019-04-01“…Genetic evidence suggests that Gram-positive thermophilic bacteria capable of extracellular electron transfer (EET) are positioned close to the root of the Bacteria kingdom on the tree of life. On the contrary, EET in Gram-negative mesophilic bacteria is a relatively new phenomenon that is evolutionarily distinct from Gram-positive bacteria. …”
