Review of Experimental Work in Biomimetic Foils
Published 2005“…This review focuses primarily on experimental studies on some of the, at least partially understood, mechanisms, which include 1) the formation of streets of vortices around and behind two- and three-dimensional propulsive oscillating foils; 2) the formation of vortical structures around and behind two- and three-dimensional foils used for maneuvering, hovering, or fast-starting; 3) the formation of leading-edge vortices in flapping foils, under steady flapping or transient conditions; 4) the interaction of foils with oncoming, externally generated vorticity; multiple foils, or foils operating near a body or wall.…”

Near-field dynamics of parallel twin jets in cross-flow
Published 2017“…Moreover, as the separation distance decreases to 1.5D, the twin jets interact closer to the jet exit such that organized leading-edge and lee-side vortices are present along the symmetry plane. Cross-stream results indicate that the pair of inner vortices associated with the two resulting CVPs is being induced to move towards each other along the symmetry plane, where their opposite-signed vorticities annihilate with each other eventually. …”

Localised and bifurcating structures in planar shear flows
Published 2020“…Turbulent spots in planar shear flows are always accompanied by the presence of (i) the quadrupolar flows outside the spot; and (ii) the counter-rotating streamwise vortices inside the spot. In the present thesis, those flow structures, i.e. quadrupolar flows and streamwise vortices have been treated analytically : By exploiting the geometric scale separation inscribed in all planar shear flows, equations governing the large-scale flow surrounding turbulent spots has been derived from the Navier-Stokes equations and solved analytically. …”

Cylinder-wall interference effects on finite-length wavy cylinders at subcritical Reynolds number flows
Published 2013“…Vortex-shedding behaviour of smaller-wavelength wavy cylinders has also been observed to be considerably less sensitive to variations in the physical configurations, due to the formation of multiple streamwise vortices at the saddles. The presence of these coherent streamwise vortices is postulated to play a key role in significantly reducing flow-altering effects associated with the end-walls.…”

Particle dean migration in short arcuated microchannels
Published 2021“…With the same channel length and flow conditions, particle migration distance was the largest for the channel with the smallest radius (smallest Dean number), which indicates the presence of stronger Dean vortices to induce particle lateral migration. Interestingly, comparison between half loop channel and one loop channel at the same downstream distance showed that bead migration distance was greater in the one loop channel, which suggests that the backpropagation of pressure gradient from downstream flow towards upstream Dean vortices may alter their strength and resultant particle lateral migration. …”
