Effects of scaling and cleaning on the performance of forward osmosis hollow fiber membranes
Published 2013“…Forward osmosis (FO) process as an alternative to conventional desalination techniques has attracted much attention in recent years. Since mineral salt scaling is one of the major limitations for seawater desalination, the current study focused on the behaviors of thin film composite (TFC) FO hollow fibers, which were fabricated in our laboratory, under the circumstance of calcium sulfate (CaSO4) scaling with sodium chloride as draw solution. …”

Fabrication of composite FO hollow fiber membranes by co-spinning process – preliminary investigation on properties of the support layer
Published 2010“…One of the challenges deterring the full exploration of FO potential in this area is the limited number of commercially available FO membranes with high water permeation and superior salt separation performance. The ultimate aim is to fabricate composite hollow fiber FO membranes in a one step co-extrusion and phase inversion process as an alternative to current available membranes not optimised for FO processes. …”

A signal through the noise: accurate determination of hydrogen atom positions in crystal structures and optimisation of Laue neutron diffraction methods
Published 2021“…This has allowed a variety of chemically and crystallographically interesting studies to be performed, specifically:

Determining the novel geometry around transition-metal hydride centers, where the signal due to the hydrides can be more confidently distinguished than in an X-ray diffraction experiment; using Laue neutron derived difference Fourier maps to demonstrate that proton disorder can be mistakenly assigned in X-ray derived crystallographic models; performing variable temperature Laue neutron diffraction to identify proton migratory behaviour across short-strong hydrogen bonds; reassigning the space group of a previously reported cobalt(III) coordination complex, in which the lack of inversion symmetry becomes apparent upon accurate determination of the hydrogen atom positions; using Laue neutron diffraction data to more confidently classify systems as co-crystals or salts.

Following this, the optimisation and development of the Laue neutron diffraction methods used is described. …”
